Yoga Biomechanics

Back, neck, hip, shoulder, foot pain? ANY PAIN?

Join us for any or all parts of this series to learn poses to align and balance the body – using amazing corrective exercises to improve health and well-being.

Biomechanics is the study of movement. Bev will address alignment and healthy movement patterns specific to yoga poses. Benefits include: self assessment and awareness of alignment and movement patterns, healthy joint loading for bone health, joint stabilization for injury prevention and injury healing, stretches/poses to optimize blood flow and toxin removal to areas of reduced range of motion, initiation of muscles required for improved balance and fall prevention. We will also address how to use alignment and movement outside of the yoga studio incorporating into daily life for overall wellness and health benefits.

Part 1: Saturday, March 3, 3-5 pm … Learn poses to align and balance the body, focusing on the feet and knees.

Part 2: Saturday, April 14, 3-5 pm … We'll review, and then we will move up the body, focusing on alignment points, poses, and movements for hips and low back. You are not required to complete Part 1 to participate.

Part 3: Saturday, June 9, 3-5 pm … We will review Part 1 and 2 focusing on feet, knees, hips and back. Then we will move up the body, focusing on thoracic spine, shoulders, and neck. Although helpful, you are not required to complete Part 1 and 2 to participate.

Part 4: Saturday, July 14, 3-5 pm … The grand finale! We will review all alignment points, poses and movement, and put it all together for a total body new you workshop! Although helpful, you are not required to complete Parts 1-3 to participate.

Bev Stegman, BS, MAud, CR, RYT completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training at Marietta Center for Yoga and Well Being, and has her Yoga for Scoliosis Certification, and is the only certified yoga for scoliosis trainer in the State of Georgia. Dr. Jennifer Conway is a functional medicine practitioner who designs personalized health care programs using whole food nutrition, supplements, herbs and essential oils. Her speciality is women's health with a focus on balancing hormones, weight management, and anti-aging regimens. Dr. Conway has been working in the alternative health care field since 2000. She is a Certified Massage Therapist, Doctor of Chiropractic, Applied Clinical Nutritionist and Essential Oil Educator.

Yoga for Shoulder Health

The shoulder is one of the most complicated joints in the body. It has the greatest ROM (Range of Motion) of any joint and it is also very susceptible to overuse / injury. This workshop will offer information about the anatomy of the shoulder and the poses that bring mobility to the shoulder area. Regular practice of these poses is an effective way to assist in relieving a variety of shoulder issues and to boost overall shoulder health.

We will start with simple stretches to warm the shoulder/chest muscles and then asanas (poses) that are appropriate for shoulder strengthening and for increasing the range of motion. Props will be used if needed to further assist each participant to assure their comfort and safety.

Elizabeth Ereddia is a massage therapist, wellness coach, herbalist, and educator. She is well versed in traditional (folk medicine), functional medicine, and herbals for women and children.

Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra

During the workshop, we will learn about and participate in an hour of Yin Yoga poses.

We’ll learn:

  • What Yin Yoga is and how it differs from other types of yoga
  • How to do Yin Yoga poses safely and effectively
  • How to use Yin Yoga as an opportunity to learn more about our own bodies and to calm our own minds

We will also learn about and participate in the practice of Yoga Nidra, which is a type of guided meditation. Yoga Nidra relaxes us on the physical, emotional, and mental levels and participants feel rested and renewed when the practice is complete.

Beyond Asana Book Study

Join us the first Thurday of each month from noon until 1:30 PM for a yoga philosophy book study and discussion.

More in-depth study of yoga philosophy helps us integrate and incorporate the wonderful teachings of yoga throughout our lives.
